2019 Back to the Classics Challenge

BTCC Berlin Books

For the last three years, I have participated in the Back to the Classics Challenge, and as much as I am trying to simplify my life this next year as we get ready to sell our house, this and my Modern Classics Challenge are not things I plan to drop. Both push me to try books I might not otherwise ever try and to find new literary loves! Below I have listed books I am considering reading for each of the 12 categories. Since I will be having to repaint the entire house (and will thus have plenty of time for audiobooks), I have selected almost all books that are over 500 pages in length. We will see just how many of them I actually end up reading!

1. 19th Century Classic – Little Women by Louisa May Alcott (1869)

2. 20th Century Classic – The Lord of the Rings by JRR Tolkien (1955)

3. Classic by a Woman Author – Gone with the Wind by Margaret Mitchell (1936)

4. Classic in Translation – Don Quixote by Miguel de Cervantes (1605)

5. Classic Comic Novel – The Pickwick Papers by Charles Dickens (1837)

6. Classic Tragic Novel – The Brothers Karamazov by Fyodor Dostoevsky (1880)

7. Very Long Classic – The Story of Philosophy by Will Durant (1926)

8. Classic Novella – Casino Royale by Ian Fleming (1953)

9. Classic From the Americas – I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings by Maya Angelou (1969)

10. Classic From Africa, Asia, or Oceania – Mahabharata by Vyasa (800 BCE)

11. Classic From a Place You’ve Lived – The Civil War: A Narrative by Shelby Foote (1963)

12. Classic Play – The Taming of the Shrew by William Shakespeare (1593)
